AI fuels $37 billion propaganda surge with fake videos and personas
Artificial intelligence is transforming propaganda into a powerful tool, flooding social media with deepfake videos and synthetic personas that manipulate public perception worldwide.
Following Iran’s missile strikes on Israel, AI-generated videos depicting false scenes of destruction in Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion Airport went viral, despite no real footage existing.
Forensic experts confirmed that many of the most viewed clips were deepfakes created using advanced AI video models like Google Veo3 and Kling 2.1 Master.
These AI-generated videos are highly realistic, making it difficult for non-expert viewers to distinguish fact from fiction.
Iranian TikTok campaigns have deployed five main categories of AI content, including before-and-after war zone transformations and fabricated missile attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X continue to host and promote these manipulated videos, with some clips garnering millions of views.
The propaganda extends beyond the Middle East, with Russia’s “Pravda” network reportedly contaminating AI chatbot training data to spread pro-Kremlin misinformation globally.
According to Israel’s International Institute for Counter-Terrorism, Arabic and Farsi AI content promotes regional solidarity and anti-Israel sentiment, while Hebrew videos focus on psychological pressure within Israel.
AI-generated synthetic personas with lifelike speech and expressions are also being used to create fake social media profiles and virtual influencers, a market projected to reach $37.8 billion by 2030.
Iranian state media has used AI to broadcast old wildfire footage as if Israeli cities were burning, while Israeli authorities have restricted media coverage to control narratives, inadvertently fueling misinformation.
Experts warn that generative AI has expanded the battlefield into every smartphone and social feed, making everyone both a combatant and a potential casualty in this new era of digital warfare.
